The History of John Lennon's Favourite coat, the Afghan Coat





Long before being called the Penny lane coat after the movie Almost Famous, 
the Afghan coat emerged in Afghanistan and is the traditional overcoat of the Afghan tribes, the Pashtuns.
it's a coat made out of sheepskin or goatskin, made with the fleece on the inside and the suede on the outside it was colorful and finely embroidered with silk threads and could be made with or without sleeves and like a jacket or a full length coat. 
Craig Sams a business man started first to imported them from the Ghazni province in the UK in 1966 and sold them through Hippie boutique like "Granny takes a trip" in Kings Road.
After the Beatles start wearing the coat and the photographs appeared in media the demand became to big to keep up and the artisanal makers couldn't follow.
